4 Tips for Building Resilience in Project Teams
In the fast-paced world of project management, having a resilient team (the ability for your team to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to change) is going to make your projects even more fun than you thought.
But how do you build a resilient project team? It's about preparing your team to face challenges head-on. Here are four tips that can create a resilient team dynamic:
1. Cultivate Open Communication
Encourage your team to share their thoughts and concerns openly, in an environment where team members feel safe expressing their opinions and feedback. As the project manager, sharing transparent updates about the project, can also set an example to the rest of the team on what to expect for communication and updates.
💡TIP: Opt for regular updates with the project team via calls as well as via a messaging platform like Slack or Teams.
2. Emphasize Continuous Learning
Project management is constantly involving, and there are new technologies and tools that become part of the landscape of project management every day. Encouraging your team to engage in continuous learning opportunities can help your team learn new ways to pivot and adapt new technologies to your project work.
💡TIP: In terms of learning opportunities, look for formal training, conferences, workshops, lunch and learns, or cross-training within the team.
3. Develop Emotional Intelligence
Resilience is as much about managing your emotions and learning how to read your team, as it is about managing tasks. Developing your emotional intelligence can empower you and your team members to handle stress better, resolve conflicts more appropriately, and respond to challenges faster.
💡TIP: When you and your team members genuinely understand and care for each others’ professional and personal growth, you establish a loyal, supportive team dynamic in project management.
4. Implement a Process that Works for the Team
Structure is necessary for a project. Too little rigidity and the project falls apart and team members are lost without direction. Too much rigidity and the team can feel stifled or put in a box. Introducing flexibility in processes and decision-making allows teams to respond more dynamically to changes and challenges as they occur (and they will occur).
💡TIP: Make sure you document the process that works best for your team and provide it with transparency to the team. Be open to suggestions for improvements that might help the team work better together.
